The Nipawin Curling Club was established in the winter of 1924 in Nipawin’s first Curling rink located in the corner where the Anglican Church now stands. In 1925, a new rink was erected on Second Street East. The 1st Nipawin Bonspiel was held in 1927.

The Nipawin Autospiel, which ran from 1947-1954, was the first of it’s kind in the world. It turned the curling world upside down and put Nipawin on the map for curlers across Canada and into the United States, by offering a top prize of four new automobiles. The Saskatoon Star Phoenix stated, “Up until the Nipawin car bonspiel, there was hardly any coverage of curling in newspaper and radio beyond a local level. But by gathering the world’s finest curlers and putting up cars for the competition, Nipawin caught the fancy of the entire country. People as far away as Vancouver, were staying up until 2am just to hear Bill Good’s reports from Nipawin. This was the start of creating tremendous public relations in curling.” The first autospiel was held Jan 6 to the 16
th in 1947, and had 103 rinks entered.

The 1964-65 season was the 1
st season to sport artificial ice. November of 1966 offered the first “big” cashspiel, with prize money of $1800. In 1969, Nipawin hosted it’s 1st Provincial Senior Men’s competition.

1981-1983 saw Nipawin without a rink while construction of a new facility was being built, however the curling club continued on strong. In Jan of 1984, the new “Evergreen” rink opened by hosting the northern men’s Masters (over 60) competition.

November of 1984 saw the revival of the Nipawin Autospiel. In 1987, the autospiel was as international event with the participation of a team from Aberdeen, Scotland. 1987 also saw the provincial ladies Tournament of Hearts hosted in Nipawin for the first time. And at the end of the 1987 year, a vote held by the curling club, the golf club and the Evergreen Centre, saw all three organizations amalgamated into the Nipawin Evergreen Golf & Curling Club.

Not content to rest on it’s laurels, the Nipawin Evergreen Curling Club continues to offer high-quality play and host events that set new standards in curling. Check our
